LIST OF ITEMS TO BRING ON A HIKE:

MOST IMPORTANT
  • A Hiking Punchcard is required to hike with Sheryl's Group.  Punchcards are available year round from Sheryl for $35 (15 local hikes of YOUR choice). They are always available to purchase at any hike.  You may invite your friends on our hikes and let them use one some of your punches.
A Hiking Punchcard makes a great gift for a friend!  Let me know a head of time and we'll wrap it for you in a special gift wrapping!  smcgloch@yahoo.com
  • Water – Bring and DRINK water.
  • Shoes – Quality LIGHT WEIGHT athletic walking or running shoes with good traction are the best. (Heavy-duty hiking shoes/boots are NOT necessary ANY time of the year.) If you only spend money on 2 things for hiking, make it good quality shoes with traction and socks. Good shoes and socks equal happy feet. Happy feet make happy hikers.
  • Socks –
  • Preferably "Smart Wool" or similar brand (Available at REI and related stores.)
  • Yak Trax
  • – Ice/Snow Slippers – A winter hiking requirement. Get them ASAP. Be ready for fall and winter hikes. (Available at REI and related stores.) Cost: $20
  • Trekking poles/walking stick -
  • (Available at REI and related stores) Trekking Poles are recommended for most hikes year round. Instead of relying on your legs to do all the work, trekking poles will allow the rest of your body to help thus making the hike easier while getting a better "full body workout". They are also great in balancing and will help you avoid sprained or twisted ankles on rocky or uneven trails.
  • Dress in layers You can always peel off clothes. Poor hiking fabrics: cotton, denim and anything else that may restrict movement and absorb moisture. Best fabrics: polyester, nylon, fleece, etc.
  • Hat & Gloves
  • Poncho or rain/snow repellent coat
  • (or a large garbage bag w/ holes for arms and head).
  • Snack
  • – A light simple snack. If you are feeling generous, we love it when others share with us i.e. trail mix, nuts, dried fruit, granola bars, etc. It’s a great bonding experience to share and eat snacks together on top of a mountain! My favorite treat to bring: Freshly Ground Whole Wheat Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Toiletries (toilet paper and hand sanitizer)
  • Sunglasses
  • Light Pack or Back Pack to carry stuff in
  • Cell phones – emergencies only

ADDITIONAL ITEMS TO BRING (OPTIONAL):
  • $1 – $2 to those who drive. Not a requirement but we encourage those who carpool to give their driver a little gas money. Besides the gas, there is plenty of wear and tear on a car driving in the canyons.
  • Hot Drink or Soup -
  • For winter hikes, I’ll occasionally bring a thermos full of hot chocolate or soup to share with the group when we get back to our cars. It’s a great feeling to stop and enjoy a hot treat on a mountain before going home. Feel free to do the same if you want. (I don’t carry this on a hike – it’s in the car waiting for us when we get back.)
